While many of us think of a four day weekend, endless good food and football, Thanksgiving commemorates the Pilgrims making it through the first year in this country with the help of the Native Americans. And at the Allen Community Outreach we try to continue that tradition of neighbors helping each other with our Thanksgiving Food Basket program.
Each year our goal is to provide a week’s worth of groceries including a traditional Thanksgiving meal – everything from stuffing and turkey to the pumpkin pie. Each year we wonder how we are ever going to be able to accomplish such a feat and each year the compassion and generosity of our community shines as you come together with donations of food and your time to make it successful..
This year we were able to serve 838 people - a total of 202 families. We had 160 volunteers come out and help us with the food drive (at the 3 Allen Kroger stores and the Wal Mart Neighborhood Market), with sorting, packing and distributing the boxes at the First United Methodist Church for a total of 400 volunteer hours!
Whatever your contribution was – a can of food, a gift of cash, a turkey (or a coupon for a turkey), a gift card or an hour of your time - we would like to thank you for helping make a difference in the lives of our neighbors who needed a helping hand this Thanksgiving.
